Casement Windows

Casement windows are the most widely used option across residential projects and for good reason. They are hinged at the side or top, open outwards and provide reliable ventilation with solid weather sealing. The hardware is proven, installation is straightforward compared to other types and they sit comfortably within most budgets.

These work well in standard house windows, extensions and refurbishments where you need a clean, functional result without overcomplicating the specification. U-values typically sit around 1.2 W/m²K, panels can reach widths of around 1500mm and multi-point locking is standard across the range. The aluminium frames come in a wide variety of colours and finishes, so matching existing architecture is rarely an issue.

Installation quality is what separates a casement window that performs well from one that causes problems. Alignment, sealing and squareness all affect long-term performance, which is why we take the fitting process seriously regardless of how routine a job might look on paper.

Tilt and Turn Windows

Tilt and turn windows give you two modes of operation from a single unit. Turned fully, the sash opens inward like a door, allowing the glass to be cleaned safely from inside the property. Tilted at the top, they provide secure background ventilation without exposing the full opening.

This makes them particularly practical on upper floors or in apartments where getting to the outside face of a window is not straightforward. The inward opening is also useful in areas where external space is limited or where planning restrictions limit projecting elements.

Performance sits slightly ahead of casement in most configurations, with U-values typically between 1.0 and 1.2 W/m²K and the capacity for larger panel sizes. The hardware is more complex, which means the units are heavier and installation requires precise hinge positioning and adequate structural support. Done properly, they are durable and low maintenance. Done poorly, they become a persistent problem.

Fixed Windows

Fixed windows have no opening mechanism. They exist purely to admit light and frame a view, which allows the glazing to be much larger and the frame profiles to be kept to an absolute minimum. Because there are no moving parts or hardware to account for, thermal performance is typically the best of the three, with U-values reaching as low as 1.0 W/m²K.

They are most commonly used in extensions alongside opening windows, or as feature glazing in contemporary renovations where a large uninterrupted glass panel is part of the design intent. The absence of handles and hinges also gives the elevations a noticeably cleaner appearance.

Larger fixed units require careful structural preparation. The surrounding openings need to be properly built out to take the load and the glass itself needs to be handled and positioned correctly during installation. Choosing Between Systems

Most projects use a combination rather than a single system throughout. A typical extension might use fixed panels on the side elevations to maximise light, casements where regular ventilation is needed and tilt and turn on upper floor openings. Getting the mix right at the design stage avoids compromises later.

If you are replacing existing windows, the current configuration is a useful starting point, but it is worth questioning whether it was the right choice to begin with. Properties that were originally fitted with standard casements throughout may benefit from tilt and turn on upper floors or fixed panels where views and light are more important than ventilation.
